A whistleblower has alleged Chestatee Regional Hospital engaged in a country-wide scheme to defraud insurance companies. The scheme involved the Hospital’s lab billing for lab services across the country. As a rural hospital, the reimbursement rates were significantly higher than other lab reimbursement rates. The hospital owner, an attorney, purportedly profited immensely from his scheme. Though it does not appear that the whistleblower went through legal channels to blow the whistle, Florida has a whistleblower act which would have provided the brave whistleblower some protection (Click here to see Florida False Claims Act).
