The Eastern District of Michigan Judge Nancy G. Edmonds sentenced Dr. Mahmoud Rahim to 6 years in prison for his role in a $10.4 Million Dollar healthcare kickback scheme. Dr. Rahim was found guilty of several healthcare fraud related counts for accepting kickbacks in exchange for referring patients for electromyogram tests, some of which were unnecessary, and physical therapy performed by unlicensed therapists. Rahim attempted to disguise the kickbacks, calling them “rent”. It does not appear that a whistleblower brought these misdeeds to the government’s attention; rather, the government’s own investigation seems to have led to the indictement and ultimate conviction.
