On January 30, 2019, the Middle District of Florida U.S. Attorney’s Office issued a press release announcing a settlement with AmeriCare Ambulance Service, Inc. and its sister company, AmeriCare ALS, Inc. to resolve claims that they fraudulently billed Medicare for medically unnecessary ambulance transport services. The AmeriCare companies paid $5.5 Million to resolve the matters. The whistleblower received approximately $1.15 Million for his assistance in the matter.
U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez stated:
“Fraudulently billing the government for medically unnecessary ambulance transports poses a heavy drain on the Treasury, deprives federal health care programs of valuable resources, and will not be tolerated,” said U.S. Attorney Chapa Lopez. “This lawsuit and today’s settlement evidence our office’s ongoing efforts to safeguard federal health care program beneficiaries from the effects of this type of unlawful conduct.”
