It was my pleasure to serve as a panelist on the skin substitute panel, discussing fraud in the area of wound care and skin substitutes. The panel included three government (one former) attorneys, as well as a colleague in the relator’s bar. In 2025, whistleblowers helped the government recover $1.5 Billion of fraudulently obtained money, and return it to the public fisc. These schemes are multi-level, often starting at the manufacturing level, and working their way down the fraudulent pyramid, to distributors and providers. The federal government has reined in the pricing of the skin substitutes, which will hopefully translate to fewer fraudsters stealing from Medicare at the enormous levels previously seen.
